I’m going to save you a lot of time:
Don’t hire a cheap SEO service – it’s just not worth the risk.
The truth about cheap SEO services is that they are cheap for a reason. Once you understand the in’s and out’s of SEO services, you come to the conclusion that…
…it’s actually impossible to get excellent SEO results while only paying a few hundred bucks per month.
There is no way around it. Good SEO takes a lot of…
That’s why reputable agencies charge the fees that they do. I wrote this article so that you don’t fall into the cheap SEO service trap.
And as a BONUS – I have some solutions if you can’t afford to pay for good quality SEO services at the moment.
What is a “Cheap SEO Service”?
A cheap SEO service is an agency that promises good SEO results while charging you significantly less than most of the other SEO agencies.
What are the cheap SEO services missing?
One word: Quality.
SEO is definitely a quality over quantity game.
Cheap SEO services only go for fast result strategies. Since they charge much less, they never spend the time and effort to implement SEO properly.
This often leads to risky black hat SEO techniques that generate good results quickly but in the long run, leave your site in worse condition than it was before.
It’s ironic really…
They seem cheap upfront but actually end up costing more in the future.
5 Reasons To Stay Away From Cheap SEO Services
You might think that I am just bashing on cheap SEO services. But that isn’t true!
I’ll prove why you should steer clear of cheap SEO services with these 5x important points, so pay attention…
1. Successful SEO Campaigns Are Expensive To Run
That pretty much ends the argument right there.
How is it even possible to offer quality cheap SEO services if quality SEO campaigns cost a lot to run?
I’ll let you in on a hint: You can’t.
Yes, you can find SEO packages for $300 (or less) per month. And they will promise the world with excellent rankings and lots of targeted traffic to your site.
Don’t believe them.
There are tons of skills required to execute an SEO campaign. You need to have a:
- Project Manager – Manages the entire project and makes sure that it’s moving forward.
- Technical SEO lead – Focusses on optimising the technical parts of the website.
- Content Writer – Specialised writer that provides SEO copywriting and content writing.
- Graphic Designer – Designs the graphics that are needed for the campaign.
- Link building – Finds link placement opportunities and contacts other website owners to secure those placements.
- Guest Post Writer – Writes the content for guest post articles and blogs.
- Website Developer – Makes bigger structural optimisations and changes to the website.
All of these skills are needed to execute just one SEO campaign successfully. It doesn’t take much to realise this is going to cost more than $300 per month.
SEO campaigns just aren’t cheap from the get-go.
2. Short Term-Gains Can Lead To Long Term Losses
What can you expect from a cheap SEO service?
Risky and black hat SEO tactics such as:
- Temporary SEO fixes
- Spammy links
- Keyword stuffed content
- Outdated strategies
What do all these tactics lead to?
Fast results and maybe even some significant gains but… it’s all just smoke and mirrors.
When Google realises that you (and your cheap SEO services) are using dodgy techniques to purposely manipulate their algorithm, they will hit back… And hit back very hard.
Long-term Google will penalise your site and put your domain onto a blacklist.
Overnight organic traffic could drop to almost zero.
Trust me, bouncing back from Google penalties is a lot of work and takes a long-time.
It will require an SEO specialist with a lot of experience to undo all of those mistakes. This will cost you more than if you just hired a quality SEO service in the first place.
Even from a business perspective, a cheap SEO service just doesn’t make sense.
3. Cheap SEO Services Don’t Implement Personalised SEO Strategies
SEO requires custom strategies to get good results.
Each campaign needs to be tailored to the client’s needs because every client faces different challenges.
Some industries are more competitive than others. Other industries require lots of content. Even the location of the business can affect what is needed to rank organically.
The point is that there is no one size fits all SEO strategy. Each strategy needs to be:
…to the clients’ needs.
Cheap SEO services don’t have the time to do it. They aren’t charging enough to employ a proper SEO strategy expert.
So what do they do instead?
They use the same cookie-cutter strategies for every client and hope that it works out. In the SEO world, we call these “copy-paste” strategies.
A “copy-paste” SEO strategy is not what you want for your business.
You are essentially copying a predetermined strategy and pasting it on a new website. In the best case, you will see very minimal movement in your rankings.
You end up with significant penalties against your site.
4. Cheap SEO Services Usually Provide Bad Customer Service
Excellent customer support isn’t cheap.
We have all had those terrible experiences when you ring a customer support line and the person at the end can barely understand what you’re saying.
How does it make you feel?
Customer service is an important part of good SEO services.
- Good communication
…Are at the heart of every client and agency relationship. I get the best results for clients that know they can trust me with their SEO campaign.
When you let someone work on your site, you need to be confident that you can contact them and bring any problems you have to them whenever you need.
What’s more important is that you can trust they will listen and respond appropriately.
Cheap SEO services are always short on time. They are serving tons of clients and often barely keeping their heads above water.
When you have a problem or need something, they just won’t have the time (or care enough) to look after you properly.
5. Cheap SEO Services Don’t Hire Professional SEOs
How do cheap SEO services keep costs low?
They outsource to who knows where hiring anyone who says they know what SEO is and more importantly… Fit’s their budget.
They are more focused on hiring people who fit their budgets than checking if they have the required skills.
Do you really want these kinds of people working on your SEO?
On top of this, the SEO team members they hire often only have a very basic level of:
This means they use those generic copy-paste strategies and hope that it works out.
More often than not it doesn’t. Surprise!
Quality SEO agencies hire experienced professionals who know what they are doing. They pay the money to get excellent staff with reputations for delivering.
They have the skill sets and years of experience to identify what needs to be done and execute effective SEO campaigns.

What To Do If You Can’t Afford Good SEO Service?
I didn’t just want to destroy the myth of “good cheap SEO services” and leave you with nothing. I want to help by giving you some direction.
So what do you do if you just don’t have the budget to invest in good SEO services?
Invest in SEO Education
If you can’t afford the help of an SEO professional then become the professional yourself.
Find a quality SEO program or course that teaches you what you need to know.
Compared to hiring an agency, SEO courses are a fraction of the cost. But make sure you don’t opt for some cheap $20 course on Udemy. $20 courses will get you $20 results.
Invest in an SEO course or program that teaches you everything you need to know. You don’t just want to learn tactics or hacks – you want to learn sound SEO strategy.
In most cases, premium SEO programs are less than $1,500.
If this is still too much, you will often find that many of them offer payment plans to make it more manageable. Take advantage of those payment plans.

Hire An SEO Consultant
Another great option is to hire a professional consultant for a 1-hour consultancy call.
Even though consultants tend to be more expensive per hour the benefit you get from the consultant will be well worth it.
Choose well-known consultants who have a proven history of delivering results.
The consultant should have a clear reputation for consistently delivering excellent SEO results in a range of industries.

Hire An SEO Freelancer
Freelancers are usually cheaper than an agency.
Where SEO pricing for an agency might be $200 an hour for ongoing SEO work, you can find expert freelancers that charge as little as $100 an hour.
When you hire a reputable SEO freelancer, you can expect to get excellent work at a much lower price than an agency.
The difference in price is usually due to the:
- Resources the freelancer has vs the agency.
- Skills the freelancer has vs the agency.
For smaller SEO campaigns in less competitive niches, this shouldn’t matter much. A freelancer should be able to:
- Execute the campaign
- Deliver the results you need
Just do your homework and choose the right one!
Try In-House SEO
If you are really strapped for cash, you can execute SEO campaigns for yourself.
If you have team members, ask them if they have any SEO experience. Even if you or your team only knows the basics, you should be able to get some results.
You also have the option to hire an SEO team member.
First, you can hire one for just a few hours per week. As you start to see results and your budget grows, then, add more hours to the SEO team member.
Building your own in-house SEO team gives you more control over campaigns.
Follow well-known SEO professionals and learn from what they are doing. There is tons of FREE information out there to continue to build your own SEO skills.
Just make sure the people you are learning from really are professionals. There are plenty of fake SEO ‘gurus’ out there.
Check out my SEO blog where I have tons of free:
- SEO tips & strategies
- Tutorials & reviews
- Case studies
…to follow along with.
When you feel ready to take the next step, you can then jump into a premium SEO course. This will help you build on the SEO skills you have already developed.
Wrapping It Up
Cheap SEO services are just that – cheap. They offer:
- Very little value for the client
- End up doing more damage than good
So, be smart and avoid the cheap SEO trap. It just isn’t worth the risk.
Invest in SEO done by a professional SEO agency you can trust. You can have the confidence they will deliver the results you are looking for.
If you don’t have the SEO budget at the moment to invest in quality services, that is completely ok. Opt for one of the other less expensive solutions so you can still work towards your SEO goals.
